GP CARE WAKEFIELD
is an extended out of hours service owned by all Wakefield GP Practices to cover the entire population of the Wakefield district.
It operates from 6pm to 10 pm Monday to Friday, and
9am to 3pm Saturday’s & Bank Holiday’s & 9am to 1pm Sunday's
Our telephones will be automatically diverted during those hours. Outside of these times please telephone 111 for urgent matters or go to 111.nhs.uk for routine matters, or ring us back during normal surgery hours if your need is not urgent.
Following triage of your problem, if deemed appropriate, the service will offer you a GP appointment, you will be informed of the location during your telephone call.
There needs to be shared consent in place for them to access your records to allow them to provide safe care therefore please ensure you give explicit record sharing consent when accepting an appointment with the service. Patients who prefer not to give shared consent cannot access this service.
The service is not available for routine matters such as repeat prescriptions.
Routine care by HCA/Nurse
In addition to the above, during 6pm to 8pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 1pm on Saturday’s, Sunday’s and Bank Holiday’s, patients can be seen for routine annual reviews of their long term conditions such as: Heart Disease, Diabetes, COPD, Asthma & Stroke but only if your condition is well controlled and stable. Other routine nurse care appointments include:
- Blood tests
- Spirometry
- Review of contraception pill
- Repeat depo injection (you will be asked to take your injection to your appointment)
- Smears
- B12 injection (You will be asked to take your injection to your appointment)
- Removal of sutures and clips / wound care (you will be asked to take your dressings to your appointment) Please ask our receptionist when booking.

Services offered by the Walk in Centre include:
Treating minor injuries and illnesses, including but not limited to:
- Wounds, e.g. superficial cuts and bruises, minor burns and scalds, insect or animal bites, risk of tetanus, minor head injuries- (except in under 2’s and over 65’s as in NICE guidance)
- Muscle and joint injury, e.g. strains and sprains, back pain, tendonitis;
- High temperature
- Headaches and dizziness
- Coughs, colds, ‘flu-like’ symptoms and hay-fever;
- Ear, nose and throat infections (e.g. minor infections such as sore throats and ear aches)
- Eye care e.g. conjunctivitis, styes, removal of superficial foreign bodies;
- Stomach ache, indigestion, constipation, vomiting and diarrhoea;
- Dermatology and skin complaints e.g. rashes, minor allergic reactions, scabies, head lice, sunburn
- Emergency contraception
- Post operation wound care
- Acute psychological conditions and crisis resolution
PHARMACY
Pharmacists are able to give you help and advice about many minor illnesses such as: a cough, cold, hay fever & sore throat. They can also advise you on the medication you are taking or when it would be best to see a GP or Advanced Nurse Practitioner
Urgent Treatment Centre
Pontefract Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, it is led by a team of GPs with experience in emergency medicine, who work alongside advanced nurse practitioners and emergency nurse practitioners to see and treat a range of minor illnesses and injuries. As well as attending without an appointment you can call 111 and book into the UTC
Accident & Emergency Department
An A&E department (also known as emergency department or casualty) deals with genuine life-threatening emergencies, such as:
- loss of consciousness
- a sudden confused state
- fits that are not stopping
- chest pain
- breathing difficulties
- severe bleeding that cannot be stopped
- severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
- severe burns or scalds
- stroke
- major trauma such as a road traffic collision
- feelings of self-harm or suicide
Less severe injuries can be treated in urgent treatment centres (walk-in centres or minor injury units).
