Repeat Prescriptions
This service is available for items that have previously been agreed with the doctor to be repeatable. Such items appear on the counterfoil attached to the prescription.
Please note, we are not a dispensing practice.
To improve the quality and safety of care and to reduce wasted medicines the Medicines Optimisation Team at Wakefield Clinical Commissioning Group are working closely with Practices in Wakefield to implement this initiative:
We are requesting that patients order their own regular repeat medication directly from the practice. You can do this by:
- Using the counterfoil from your last prescription and posting it in the box provided in reception
- Posting your request to us. We can post it back to you when done, if you send us a SAE
- Using the Online service, it's easy to register and convenient to use 24 hours a day 7 days a week
Most prescriptions will be sent directly to your pharmacy ELECTRONICALLY where you have nominated one. YOU SHOULD CONTACT THEM EACH TIME YOU ORDER YOUR MEDICATION FOR THEM TO KNOW WHEN TO RETRIEVE YOUR PRESCRIPTION so they can prepare it for you, ready for when you to call to collect it. For those who do not have a nominated pharmacy you will be given a TOKEN which can be taken to any pharmacy, just like a prescription.
We would like to reassure those who are unable to order their own medication that they will not be adversely affected as suitable arrangements will be made to continue providing your medication uninterrupted.
This policy also applies to any pharmacy ordering medication on your behalf: if you choose to nominate a Pharmacy to dispense your medicines, you will still need to order your own prescription from the surgery.
Antibiotics
Be Antibiotics aware
- Antibiotics are medicines used to treat infections caused by bacteria – they don’t work against most coughs, colds and sore throats because these are usually caused by viruses.
- Coughs, colds and sore throats can last anything up to three weeks but you can talk to a pharmacist about how to treat your symptoms or pain with over the counter treatments.
- It’s important to take antibiotics in the way you are instructed so that they don’t stop working against bacteria - you might have heard this called antibiotic resistance.
- Antibiotic resistance is serious because lots of routine treatments and operations cannot take place without effective antibiotics.
Further information can be found on the following website: www.nhs.uk/antibiotics
Electronic Prescriptions
If you have nominated a pharmacy you do not need to visit the practice to collect your prescription, we will send it electronically to your nominated pharmacy. If you do not have a nominated pharmacy, we will print a TOKEN for you to take to any pharmacy just as you would a prescription.
There are a few exceptions where an FP10 (paper prescription) may have to be printed.
Electronic Repeat Prescriptions (eRD)
For some patients on long term, stable medications we are able to send up to 1 years worth of prescriptions to your nominated pharmacy. They will dispense your medications at the same regular intervals but this will save you time as you will not have to order your medication from the practice each time it is due. We are currently identifying those patients that may be suitable for this service but if you think you could benefit from this please contact the practice and ask to speak to one of our Pharmacy team.
Medication Reviews
Patients on repeat medication will be asked to see a doctor, nurse practitioner, practice nurse or practice pharmacist at least once a year to review their regular medications. Please ensure that you book an appointment in good time to avoid unnecessary delays to further prescriptions.
Whenever possible we will provide your prescription the next working day but sometimes, when medication needs to be reauthorised, it may take a little longer so please allow 2 full working days if you can and remember to take weekends and bank holidays into account.
